  Caledon Villa

Description

Caledon Villa was built in 1912 in the architectural style of the Edwardian Era and due to its exceptional beauty, it has been declared a National Monument. It was originally planned to provide for a very large family and fortunately so, because today it still has many rooms, enough for the descendants of the same family and for many guests!

Apart from being the home of the Kriges, the facilities for guests have been gradually expanded since 1992 to accommodate a maximum of 25 visitors. These are provided for in three single rooms, nine double rooms, one studio and one suite. All rooms have en suite bathrooms.

Each room has been decorated individually, most of them with furniture matching the period 1880 to 1930. Many of the older pieces are family heirlooms and with the high ceilings and beautiful fire places, many visitors describe the interior as a museum in usage.

Position/General

Caledon Villa is situated in the historic town of Stellenbosch. The charm and beauty of the town is well-known to visitors. It has retained a historical character in its buildings and streets, lined by water furrows and oak trees. It is also the centre of the Cape Winelands and is surrounded by mountains and valleys. Golf courses, beaches, the Cape Peninsula and Cape Town can all be easily reached on daily outings. Being a University town, there are many young people around, a factor contributing to the unique atmosphere of Stellenbosch.

The Villa is situated on Neethling Street which has its own attractions and truly represents Stellenbosch in its diversity of cultural and natural assets. Situated at its northern end is the Conservatorium of Music which has regular concerts. At its other extremity lies the winding Eerste River with ample walking and jogging options. Between these two landmarks are the Botanical Gardens and a number of Victorian and Edwardian houses, among which Caledon Villa stands out as a gem from its era.

Most of the recommended restaurants are within 5 minutes walking distance and guests can therefore enjoy their dinner and their wine without the need to drive home.

The climate in the Western Cape supports an out-door life style and Caledon Villa is once again blessed with a very large and secluded garden with a 5 x 8m swimming pool. There are deck chairs in the open sun around the pool, private corners in the gazebo, and shaded seats on the terrace. In the evenings the picture changes : some play cards at the round table in the gazebo, others enjoy wine on the terrace and others even try their hand at the traditional braai facilities.
